HOUSTON - Houston wide receivers Daniel Spencer and Deontay Greenberry became the latest student-athletes from the Houston program to be named to a national award's preseason watch list as the Biletnikoff Award watch list was announced Tuesday by The Tallahassee Quarterback Club.
Houston is one of just four programs nationally with two receivers on the watch list for the award presented annually to college football's best receiver.
The two are a part of a group of six UH student-athletes that have accumulated nine national award watch list mentions this month. Tuesday's honor marks Greenberry's second as he joined sophomore quarterback John O'Korn on the Maxwell Award watch list. Senior center Bryce Redman was named to the Rimington Trophy watch list and junior defensive back Trevon Stewart was placed on the Jim Thorpe Award watch list while senior linebacker Derrick Mathews has been named to three watch lists - the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, The Butkus Award and the Rotary Lombardi Award.
Greenberry ranks sixth nationally among returning players with 1,202 receiving yards and 11 touchdown receptions in 2013. Named Dave Campbell's 2014 Preseason Best Receiver in the State of Texas, Greenberry was named to The American's first team last season after leading Houston with 82 receptions for 1,202 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Greenberry's 1,202 yards led The American and his 11 touchdowns were second in the league despite missing the entire SMU game and leaving the Louisville contest on the game's first series. He was the 17th player in program history to hit the 1,000-yard receiving mark in the season and his 1,202 yards ranked 10th on the UH single-season receiving yards chart. Greenberry finished the year with over 100 yards receiving in five games, a number that ranked second in The American.
Houston's second-leading receiver in 2013, Spencer played in all 13 games with 11 starts and was third in The American with four 100-yard receiving games. The Grandview, Texas, native finished the year with 52 receptions for 768 and six touchdowns, leading the team with an average of 14.8 yards per reception. Spencer also added 138 yards rushing and one touchdown on 10 carries. Spencer posted a career-best 186 receiving yards off seven receptions, including a career-long 76-yard reception, vs. BYU
The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc., will announce the ten Biletnikoff Award semifinalists on Nov. 17, 2014, following the vote by the 221 members of the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee. Likewise, the three finalists will be declared, following another vote, on Nov. 24, 2014.
