WACO, Texas - Houston Softball posted a 7-6 comeback win over Northwestern State to keep the season's hopes alive and advances to face Tulsa in the fifth game of the Waco NCAA Regional. Tulsa (51-8) and Houston (33-22) play tonight with the winner advancing to tomorrow and faces Baylor at 1 p.m.
Houston started the game with a 1-0 lead as sophomore Kayla Holland ripped a two-out double over the head of the Northwestern State right fielder to score Katie St. Pierre from first and put Houston ahead from the start. Houston improved to 16-3 when scoring in the first inning this year.
The lead didn't last for long for UH as the Lady Demons (30-22) used a five-run inning in the top of the third inning to seize a 5-1 lead. The first three batters Northwestern State sent to the plate all reached base and chased started Diedre Outon out of the game. Relief pitcher Summer Groholski came in but was unable completely shutdown the scoring while the junior allowed another pair of runs.
Save for a single run in the sixth, Groholski (8-5) settled into a groove and kept UH in the game until the Houston bats found their stroke.
Holland's bat was awake early as the second baseman made the most of her day when she delivered a three-run homer in the third inning to tie a career high with four RBIs in the game. The three-run blast was the third of the year for the Katy, Texas native and she scored St. Pierre and Haley Outon with the hit.
Northwestern State added a run in the sixth inning and had a second score secured until the Cougars alertly appealed the play. The potential seventh run for Northwestern State was changed as the Lady Demon base runner didn't touch home plate and ended the inning, giving the Cougars momentum trailing by only a pair of runs.
Houston took advantage of the miscue as the they won the game on a three-run, two-out rally during the bottom of the sixth inning to win their postseason game of the year.
In the sixth, Selena Hernandez cleared the bases with a two-out double even the contest at 6-6 scoring Jordan Rains and Kendra Cullum in the process. A single by Katie St. Pierre set the stage for Haley Outon and the senior connected on a single through the left side of the infield to put Houston on top, 7-6 on the game-winning single.
