HOUSTON - The University of Houston Softball program earned one of the 32 at-large bids to the 2014 NCAA Tournament and will face Tulsa in the opening game at the Waco Regional. This is the fourth-straight year Houston has played in NCAA postseason and the seventh time in program's 14-year history.
Houston (32-21 | 13-8) and Tulsa (50-7 | 19-4) open play at Getterman Stadium on Friday, May 16 at 4:30 p.m. with the host and No. 13 seeded Baylor Bears (42-13 | 13-5) and Northwestern State (30-20 | 15-10) playing at 7 p.m.
"I am so glad for the seniors to be the only class to go four times in a row," said head coach Kyla Holas. "I'm proud of our program to be a team that even in a rough year, we still are a postseason type program. I hope this puts a fire in a team who thought their season was over."
The Cougars finished the season fourth in the first year of the American Athletic Conference that saw half of the league (Houston, Louisville, UCF, USF) advance to an NCAA Regional. UH struggled down the stretch but navigated through a strong out of schedule lineup that buoyed the end-of-season-slump with seven wins against postseason teams.
The winner of the double-elimination Waco Regional takes on the winner of the No. 4 Athens Regional in a best-of-three series to advance to the Women's College World Series hosted in Oklahoma City (May 29-Jun 4).
