SAAC Donates To Star Of Hope
12/18/2014 12:00:00 AM | General
HOUSTON - The University of Houston Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Athletics Department combined to raise over 3000 canned food items to donate to Star of Hope, a local charity whose mission is to help feed Houston's homeless.
Star of Hope is dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men, women and their children. Positive life changes are encouraged through structured programs which focus on spiritual growth, education, employment, life management and recovery from substance abuse.
2014 marks the fourth consecutive year SAAC has organized the food drive where fans, staff, and athletes alike could donate food at various locations including the Athletics and Alumni center on campus, TDECU Stadium and Hofheinz Pavilion. For nearly a month the drive was open, which allowed SAAC to match their donation totals from a year ago.
Members of SAAC have a mission to enhance the overall student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.
On Wednesday, members of the Houston football, and men's and women's basketball teams helped load the truck to deliver to Star of Hope. Football student-athletes Shane Ros and Tyler McClosky along with student-athletes from the men's and women's basketball teams, Mikhail McClean, Adam Drexler, Bianca Winslow and Mariah Mitchell all pitched in to load the canned goods.
