Women's Golf Closes Fall Season at Jim West Challenge

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The University of Houston Women's Golf program closes out its fall season when it tees off at the Jim West Challenge on Sunday morning.
Hosted by Texas State, the three-day, 54-hole event will be played on the 6,234-yard, par-72 course at Tapatio Springs Golf Club. The Cougars will Illinois, Wisconsin, Kent State, Mississippi, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Iowa, Texas Tech, East Carolina, Missouri and host Texas State.
Fans can follow live scoring by visiting BirdieFire.com and following the appropriate links or Raegan Bremer, senior Courtney Ferguson, sophomore Emily Gilbreth and freshmen Megan Thothong, Yuka Kajiki and Courtney Tibiletti will represent the Cougars in head coach Gerrod Chadwell's starting lineup this week.
Playing as an individual, Tibiletti will tee off at 10:20 a.m., Monday, and compete with Missouri's Haelena Schwemmer and Kent State's Maddy Mullins.
The team lineup will compete in threesomes with student-athletes from Oklahoma and Wisconsin, starting at 10:30 a.m., off No. 10. Kajiki starts the round at 10:30 a.m., with Gilbreth (10:40 a.m.), Thothong (10:50 a.m.), Ferguson (11 a.m.) and Bremer (11:10 a.m.) following.
Houston enters this week's tournament on the heels of a ninth-place finish against a prestigious field at The Alamo Invitational, hosted by UTSA on Oct. 26-28 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club. The Cougars set a team record with a score of 8-under-par 280 in the Final Round of that event with four student-athletes posting sub-par rounds.
This will be the Cougars' fifth and final fall tournament of the season. From there, Houston won't tee it up in a tournament until Feb. 15-16 at the Texas State Spring Challenge at Landa Park in New Braunfels, Texas.
THE LINEUP
Bremer has been the Cougars' leader over the last two seasons and has continued that role in 2013-14. The junior has posted a 74.08 scoring average with four rounds of par or better this season to lead the Cougars and has led Houston in three of the four fall tournaments to date.
Her stellar play was on display during the summer when she became the first student-athlete in school history to compete in and advance to the Round of 64 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in Glen Cove, N.Y.
Ferguson missed the first two tournaments of the fall with an injury but has finished second among the Cougars in each of the last two events. The Clear Lake, Texas, native posted a career-low 69 in the second round at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational on Oct. 21 and recently closed out The Alamo Invitational with a 70 in the Final Round to move into a tie for 19th on Oct. 28.
Playing in her first collegiate season, Thothong joins Bremer as the only Cougars to compete in all four tournaments this season. The Dallas native has finished among the top-25 leaders in each of the last three events, including a career-best eighth-place showing at the Mary Fossum Invitational on Sept. 13-14.
Gilbreth is in her second season with the Cougars and has posted a pair of top-20 finishes this season.
Kajiki is in her first season with Houston, competing in three tournaments with a 75.67 average. The Hiroshima, Japan, native led the Cougars in the Final Round at The "Mo"Morial Invitational on Sept. 13 with a 73 and placed third at the Mary Fossum Invitational on Sept. 13-14 with a score of 223.
Tibiletti will make her second appearance of the season this week. She tied for 46th at the season-opening "Mo"Morial Invitational on Sept. 8-10.
UP NEXT
With the conclusion of the Jim West Challenge, the Cougars wrap up their fall season. Houston won't return to tournament action again until it competes at the Texas State Spring Challenge on Feb. 15-16 at Landa Park in New Braunfels, Texas.
