The Houston Cougar soccer team lost 2-0 to Tulsa and honored its four seniors for "Senior Day" in the regular season finale, on Sunday, at Carl Lewis Field.
Forwards Alexis Weaver, Kelsey Zamora and Kayla Walker, and defender/midfielder McKhenzie Raines were each honored prior to the game for their contributions throughout their Houston Cougar careers.
"I want to thank the seniors for everything they have done on and off the field," head coach Chris Pfau said. "I know we are judged by wins and losses, but they can be proud of where our program is today. We have improved so much over the past year, and it has a lot to do with them."
Tulsa found each of their goals from freshman forward Christina Holmes. Holmes' put in her first goal in the 27th minute on a ball played across the front of the goal which led to an easy finish.
The second of Holmes' goals came nearly 60 minutes later when Holmes slid in on a ball in the box colliding with keeper Jordan Brown. The ball flipped over Brown and went in the back of the net.
"I was proud of the team today," Pfau said. "We were beat up, players injured and tired, but we fought and in the second half we threw everything at them, and you cannot ask for any more. Kaya Walker and Kelsey Zamora gave us a huge impact, and it was good to see them play at that level for their last regular game. "
Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Sterner saw her first collegiate action in Sunday's contest. The Kingwood, Texas native logged nearly six minutes in her debut as a Cougar, and became the seventh freshman to see action for Houston in 2014.
Following the match, Houston learned the seedings for The American Athletic Conference Championships next weekend. The Cougars will travel to Memphis, Tennessee to face off against East Carolina on Friday, Oct 31 at 1 p.m., with the winner advancing to take on the host team Memphis in the quarterfinal round on Nov. 2. Houston fell to the Pirates 1-0 in their match on Oct. 16 earlier this season.
"We now need to make sure we take care of ourselves, and get ready for start of conference tournament," Pfau said. "As I told the team, you keep fighting like this who knows what can happen."
