HOUSTON - Head Coach Kyla Holas and the University of Houston Softball program announced the 2015 schedule with 26 home games highlighted by a wide variety of top-ranked opponents.
In her 15th season at the helm of Houston Softball, Holas has assembled a strong schedule featuring seven teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year, including three clubs (Alabama, Baylor and Louisiana-Lafayette) that played in the 2014 Women's College World Series.
"We try and play the numbers game when it comes to scheduling," Holas said. "The RPI is a big factor to postseason, and we want to make sure we put together a case every year that says we want to play with the best and compete. I am excited about our schedule this season and hope this team is prepared come February to take it on."
Houston Softball begins the 2015 season with four tournaments, two at home and two on the road.
The Cougars open on the road in Gulf Shores, Ala., for the Sand Dollar Classic hosted by The Fieldhouse, a baseball and softball training facility. For the third game of the season, the Cougars will meet Alabama, the 2014 Women's College World Series runner-up and SEC champions.
In the season home opener, the Cougars host DePaul, Stephen F. Austin, McNeese State, UMass and Northern Iowa in the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitation on Feb. 13-15. Five games will be played at Cougar Softball Stadium while a 3:30 p.m. game will be played on the West University Fields near the Rice University campus.
The following weekend, Houston Softball hosts the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic when they welcome New Mexico, Illinois and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. All games will be played on campus.
For the final tournament of the season, Houston travels to Las Vegas for the UNLV Classic. The three-day tournament begins when the Cougars face Eastern Kentucky and UC-Santa Barbara. On day two, Houston takes on host team UNLV and Iowa State followed by a Sunday morning game against California to wrap-up the tournament.
Prior to the start of conference play, Holas has scheduled several top regional opponents, including Texas A&M, Houston Baptist, Baylor, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas (2013 Women's College World Series participant), Sam Houston State, Louisiana-Lafayette and Lamar.
In its second year of existence, the American Athletic Conference returns five members (UCF, USF, Memphis, Houston, UConn) while welcoming two former Conference USA clubs (East Carolina, Tulsa).
The Cougars will face each opponent starting at the end of March for a doubleheader on Saturdays and an afternoon game on Sundays.
"The American was a great conference to compete in last season and represented well in postseason. The addition of Tulsa and ECU will only help to strengthen it, and we look forward to having them back in conference play," Holas said.
