FORT WORTH - In a hard-fought battle, the University of Houston volleyball team fell to host TCU in four sets (25-23, 16-25, 18-25, 18-25) during the TCU Nike/Molten Invitational Friday night at the TCU Rec Center.
Houston falls to 7-2 on the season, suffering its second loss and spoiling the five-match win streak. The Horned Frogs improve to 6-3 and stay undefeated in tourney play.
The Cougars started off the match strong taking the first set 25-23. Sarita Mikals and Kadi Kullerkann recorded five kills each against the Horned Frogs. Houston led most of the set, giving up the lead only once. An error by Mikals put TCU up 8-7, but an attacking error by TCU quickly tied up the score 8-8.
TCU came back to take sets two, three and four. Senior Yvonne Igodan (12) and junior Stephanie Holland (10) had double figure kills against Houston.
This match marks only the fourth time Houston had a hitting percentage below .200. Twenty-five attacking errors by Houston hurt the team's chances as they had more attempts (128) than TCU (116) and had equal amounts of kills (49).
Mikals led the team with her third double-double of the season, 14 kills and 10 digs. Kullerkann and Cortney Warren also recorded double figures in kills, 13 and 12 respectively. Kullerkann had the best hitting percentage of the Cougars with a .346.
TCU and Ole Miss are the two undefeated teams in the tournament. Houston sits 1-1 while Stephen F. Austin and Grambling State dropped two games each in the first day.
