HOUSTON - Houston punter Richie Leone was named a Second Team Preseason All-American by CBSSPorts.com Monday.
The senior, who is on the Ray Guy Award's preseason watch list, enters the season as the nation's second-best returning punter, after recording an average of 45.5 yards per punt in 2012, behind just the 45.8-yard average of Kyle Christy from Florida. Leone has been named a semifinalist the last two seasons for the Ray Guy Award, given annually to the nation's top punter.
Leone's 2012 average tied a Houston single-season record and led all Conference USA punters en route to garnering First-Team All-Conference USA honors. The Roswell, Ga., native led the league with 20 punts over 50 yards, including four over 60 yards, and a career-long 77-yard punt against Louisiana Tech.
Leone, who also handled kickoff duties for UH with 25 touchbacks on 71 kickoffs, placed 18 of his 60 punts inside the 20-yard line, including nine inside the 10-yard line. Just 21 punts were returned with opponents calling for 24 fair catches and just six punts resulting in touchbacks.
A well-rounded kicker, Leone has been working out as Houston's No. 1 placekicker in Houston's fall camp.
