Houston Baseball Drops Series Finale at UCF, 7-3

ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore Michael Pyeatt laced a two-run double to left field to put Houston on the board in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars dropped the series finale at UCF, 7-3 on Sunday afternoon in C-USA play.

NUMBERS OF NOTE
5 Michael Pyeatt picked up his fifth hit of the weekend and third RBI with his two-RBI double to left field to plate Houston's first runs of today's game.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 27-17 overall and 7-8 in league play, while UCF improved to 25-19 and 11-7. Houston was swept in a C-USA series for the first time this season.
Houston tallied seven hits, led by Pyeatt's 2-for-3 effort with his two-run double, two RBI and a walk. Freshman Justin Montemayor (2x4) registered his second two-hit game of the weekend, while freshman Josh Vidales (1x5, RBI) drove in the squad's third run on a double in the ninth. Freshman Kyle Survance (1x5) and junior Jonathan Davis (1x3, R) each tallied hits.
UCF struck first with a run in the bottom of the first frame after a leadoff walk was driven in on an RBI-single to right field.
Houston starter Aaron Garza (3.0,7,5,4,1,0) tossed two scoreless innings after that - retiring eight of his next nine hitters, before the Knights struck for four runs in the fourth inning on four straight hits.
Senior Matt Hernandez (4.1,2,1,0,0,2) replaced Garza on the bump as UCF took a 5-0 lead into the sixth inning. The southpaw tossed 4.1 innings in relief, not allowing an earned run on just two hits with two strikeouts.
Junior Frankie Ratcliff opened the sixth by reaching on an error, followed by a single by Davis giving way to Pyeatt, who doubled in both runners to put Houston on the board.
UCF responded to the Houston two-run inning with its sixth run of the game on two Houston errors and later plated a run on a double in the eighth to go up 7-2.
Junior Caleb Barker was plunked by a two-out pitch in the ninth and moved up a base on a passed ball, allowing Vidales to drive him in on a double into left center.
UCF starter Brian Adkins (6.0,5,2,0,1,5) improved to 3-6 this season with the win after allowing no earned runs on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
Reliever Zac Favre (3.0, 2,1,0,0,1) earned his fourth save of the year with his 3.0 innings in relief.
Garza suffered the loss for Houston, falling to 4-4 after allowing four earned runs on seven hits and one walk.
Freshman Jake Lemoine (0.2,2,1,1,0,1) pitched the final two outs for the Cougars out of the pen, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout.
