Derrick Mathews Named American Defensive POW

HOUSTON -Houston junior linebacker Derrick Mathews has been named The American Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week the league announced Monday. Mathews received the honor after putting together a career game on defense in Houston's narrow 47-46 loss to BYU on Saturday.
Mathews picked off his first pass of the season midway through the first quarter and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown and Houston's first lead of the day. The middle linebacker had four tackles for loss in the game including a career-high three sacks. Mathews had back-to-back sacks late in the third quarter, the latter of which resulted in a safety.
The Houston native finished the game with 12 total tackles, 10 of which were solo, for his third game of the season and the 13th of his career with double-digit tackles. Mathews is currently third in The American and 18th nationally with an average of 10.2 tackles per game.
Mathews and his Houston teammates return to action at 11 a.m. CST on Saturday at Rutgers. Houston enters the game with an overall record of 5-1 and sits atop The American standings with a 2-0 league record while Rutgers is 4-2 overall and 1-1 in The American. The game will be televised by ESPNews with SportsTalk 790 AM on the radio call.
