Houston Weekly Sports Update

BASEBALL

Last Week: Houston Baseball officially began fall practice last Wednesday, Sept. 12. The Cougars are slated to take the field until Oct. 26, practicing four days a week with various intrasquad scrimmages mixed in every week.

Notes: Houston will play one fall scrimmage at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 at Rice.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Last Week: Houston released its 2012-13 schedule which features 18 home games inside Hofheinz Pavilion, including a Dec. 1 showdown againstTexas A&M. Season tickets start at just $85 and can be purchased through the Houston Athletics Ticket Office at (713) 462-6647.

Notes: The season officially tips off with the start of practice at 5 p.m., Oct. 12, in Hofheinz Pavilion. Prior to that, head coach James Dickey will take part in Conference USA Media Day on Oct. 9, in Irving, Texas.

CROSS COUNTRY

Last Week:: The men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 37th Annual Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational Friday evening. The men's team finished sixth and the women finished 11th.

Notes: The Cougars will take a week off before heading to Austin to compete in the Rouge Grass Routes Running Festival on Sept. 28

FOOTBALL (0-3, 0-0 C-USA)

Last Week:: Houston fell to 0-3 with a 37-6 loss to No. 22 UCLA at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The loss snapped Houston's six-game road winning streak, which ranked fourth nationally entering the weekend.

This Week: Houston is off this week with its lone bye week of the season. The Cougars return to action on Sept. 29 vs. Rice in the Bayou Bucket to be held at Reliant Stadium.

Notes: The Bayou Bucket Lunch has been set for Sept. 27 at the Bayou City Event Center, tickets can be purchased by contacting the Houston Touchdown Club ... Student tickets for the Bayou Bucket go on sale on Tuesday, Sept. 18 for just $10 ... General Bayou Bucket tickets are currently for sale through the Houston Athletics Ticket Office and begin at just $20.

GOLF

Last Week:: Houston finished third at The Invitational at Kiawah in its season-opening event. The event was held on the Ocean Course of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which was the site of the PGA Championship in early August. Junior Curtis Reed finished in a tie for 15th at 229, while sophomore Roman Robledo tied for 18th at 230. It was the 12th top-five finish and 28th top-10 finish for the Cougars under head coach Jonathan Dismuke.

This Week: The Cougars leave Saturday to compete at the Shoal Creek Invitational on Sept. 24-25 at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala.

SOCCER (4-4-0, 0-0-0 C-USA)

Last Week:: Houston defeated UTSA, 2-1, in its final non-conference match Sunday afternoon. Alexis Weaver scored the game-winning goal, her first of the season, in the 73rd minute.

This Week: Houston will open conference play by hosting SMU in Robertson Stadium at 7 p.m., Friday. Following that match-up, the Cougars will face off with Tulsa at home at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Notes: The Cougars are 4-1-1 opening conference play at home.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Last Week:: Three members of the Houston women's tennis team took part in the Cougars' second fall tournament of the season over the weekend at the Islanders Open in Corpus Christi. Senior Maja Kazimieruk (kaz-MEER-eck) highlighted play, winning three matches in the singles main draw to advance to the semifinals where she fell in a tightly contested three-set contest. Sophomore Charlotte Phillips also claimed two singles victories while the two teamed up in doubles play for a win.

This Week: The Cougars return to action on Friday for the third of 11 fall tournaments when they travel to Austin for the Longhorn Invitational.

VOLLEYBALL (1-9 overall, 0-0 C-USA)

Last Week:: Houston wrapped up the weekend by hosting the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup, which featured No. 11 Florida State, No. 18 Pepperdine and No. 21 Ohio State. The Cougars dropped all three matches, but saw an improvement in play when it forced the Buckeyes to four sets in the tournament finale. Senior captain Katie Norris was named to the All-Tournament Team for the third straight tournament.

This Week: Houston opens C-USA play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Rice. The Cougars will continue their three-game road stretch at UAB on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. match on Sunday at Memphis.

Notes: Houston took time out of hosting the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup to host an hour-long clinic for local children on Saturday afternoon in the Athletics/Alumni Center ... The clinic was held in between the Cougars' two matches as they worked with children on basic volleyball skills, while showing what Houston Volleyball is all about as a program.
