HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team was one of 20 squads in Conference USA to earn the NCAA Public Recognition Award on Thursday for maintaining a high Academic Progress Rate (APR) score.
The honor is based on multi-year APR scores and is awarded to squads whose scores rank in the top 10 percent of their sports based on APR scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.
"I know how hard each of our tennis student-athletes work to achieve success not only on the court but in the classroom," Academic Center for Excellence Assistant Director Dr. Helen Gore-Laird said. "Every one of our tennis student-athletes give their all to their academic achievements, and their goal is to graduate with a meaningful degree. Everyone associated with the program takes great pride in having 100 percent of our student-athletes begin with us and graduate with us. The NCAA Public Recognition Award is icing on the cake."
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
The women's tennis program has always had a reputation for excelling in the classroom, and the 2011-12 campaign was no different as the squad earned a cumulative 3.37 grade-point average (GPA).
