HOUSTON - In the Cougar Softball team's final regular season game, Haley Outon hit her 20th home run of the year to set the school record in Houston's 7-1 win over Southern Miss. The Cougars (33-21, 15-9) swept the Golden Eagles (4-19) in the weekend series to post a 25-6 home record on the year.
"I was really happy for her," head coach Kyla Holas said. "Those numbers and records are nice to shoot for but can be a distraction sometimes. She stayed focused and had good at bats to finish the year strong; she didn't try to go for, she let it happen. Kendra too, it takes a lot mentally to stay in the box and be focused like that."
Sophomore Kenda Cullum joined Christa Raley (2007) for another school record for most times hit by a pitch in a season (16). The Conroe, Texas native was plunked twice today and nine times over the last nine games.
Outon's record-setter happened in the fourth inning, right after Melissa Gregson hit her own home run. It was the fourth straight game with a home run for Outon and she went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBIs and runs scored. She passed Laurie Wagner (2008) in the record books.
Houston used three home runs and 13 hits in all as it would be more than enough for starter Bailey Watts who scattered five hits with one unearned run in the 10th straight victory by UH over Southern Miss. Watts improved to 14-8 on the year with eight strike outs in the game, the second-most she has dealt in a game this year tying her opening day total.
Diedre Outon, making her second start in right field, secured the first run of the game in the second inning with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score sister Haley. Both runners on base, Reina Gaber and Kendra Cullum, advanced on the deep fly to move into scoring position. With two outs, freshman Jennifer Hooker cleared the bases with a double to make the score 3-0.
Hooker also went deep in the fourth inning for her first career home run.
