SAN ANTONIO - Behind a solid pitching performance by Bailey Watts, the Houston Cougar softball team hit three home runs to triumph 10-0 in a run-rule victory over UTSA Tuesday evening. The Cougars also swiped four bases in the game to reach 100 steals in the season, building on a current program record.
Pitching in front of her nearby high school of Smithson Valley, Watts was nearly unhittable against the Roadrunners. UTSA's Molly Fichtner went 2-for-2 against the righty but the rest of the UTSA line up went a combined 0-15. The sophomore picked up her 12th win and complete game of the year, and threw her fifth shutout.
Watts only inning of caution came in the third frame when she started the inning with a walk and allowed a hit to put runners on first and third. After a quick conference with catcher Haley Outon, Watts retired the two UTSA batters on strikeouts and sat down the final nine outs in order as Houston cruised to their 11th run-rule victory of the year.
The Cougar offense spotted Watts three runs in the first inning to jump out to quick lead and then scored in every single inning afterwards for good measure.
Holly Anderson led off the game with a double to the right center wall. The junior was moved around to third on Ashleigh Jones single to shallow left center. Jones stole second and the UTSA catcher threw the ball to the base, but no one was covering, allowing Anderson to score from third and Jones to take her spot on the bag.
Houston improved to 12-0 on the year when their leadoff batter scores in the opening frame.
Melissa Gregson hit a single up the middle to score Jones and then came around to home on Haley Outon's single, the Cougars fourth consecutive hit to lead off the game.
Houston added a run in both the third and fourth innings to push the lead to 5-0. Holly Anderson launched a line drive to straight-ahead center field for her 10th home run of the year as she led off the second frame.
In the third inning, Jennifer Hooker beat out an infield single with two outs on a chopper to second base to allow Reina Gaber to score from third base.
Houston continued to put pressure on the Roadrunners as the first four batters of the fourth inning reached base safely. Jones drew a walk and stole her team-leading 21st base of the year, and second of the game, to get into scoring position, Melissa Gregson followed with a single and a steal of her own before Haley Outon and Reina Gaber's back-to-back singles scored the two upperclassmen, making the score 7-0.
Houston unleashed the long ball in the fifth inning to secure the final total of 10 runs.
Sydney Gerbracht hit her fourth home run of the year, and her first in a non-pinch hit role, to bring Marissa Rodriguez home safely on a two run blast. Following Gerbracht's long ball, Haley Outon launched her 17th homer of the year for the back-to-back blasts to lead Houston to the win.
The Cougars totaled 15 hits in the game, good for the third most this season. Every starter reached base with all but one courtesy of a base hit.
