Women's Tennis Blanks UTPA on Senior Day

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team wrapped up the 2012 home slate with a shutout win over UTPA on Sunday at John E. Hoff Courts.
"I'm really happy that we picked up the win for Giorgia (Pozzan) and Laura (Ring) on Senior Day," head coach John Severance said. "Those two have meant a lot to this program and I'm glad they were able to go out in style."
The Cougars claimed their fourth win in the past five matches on Sunday to improve to 10-7 overall this season.
Liselot Koenen and Laura Ring opened doubles play with an 8-2 rout of UTPA's Wanda Beguelin and Dana Nazarova to improve to 8-2 together this season, while the Houston duo of Giorgia Pozzan and Bryony Hunter topped Malin Anderson and Suncica Strkic by a score of 8-5 at the No. 1 position to clinch the opening point.
Charlotte Phillips kicked off singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Cindy Sands at the No. 4 position and Ring followed with another shutout at the No. 5 spot for her first singles victory of the season to clinch the win for the Cougars.
Pozzan and Fraser would follow with straight-set victories at the top two positions while Koenen rounded out the scoring for Houston by winning in a tiebreaker at the No. 3 spot.
The Cougars will play the final four matches of the regular season on the road, beginning with Wednesday's contest at Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m.
