GREENVILLE, N.C.-- The University of Houston baseball team faced its first travel curfew this season and ended in a 4-4 tie at East Carolina on Saturday afternoon, following 12 innings of action.
With the tie, the Cougars head home to Houston with a 11-18-1 overall record and a 1-7-1 mark in C-USA play, while East Carolina is 22-8-1 and 6-2-1.
Having dropped the first two games of the series, Houston rode the arm of junior Austin Pruitt (8.0,13,4,2,0,4) for 8.0 complete innings as he left with a 4-4 tie. The righty allowed two earned runs on 13 scattered hits, while fanning four. Pruitt threw a career-high 132 pitches in the effort.
Senior Mo Wiley (4.0,0,0,0,0,4) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, a season-high and showed well, not allowing a single hit or walk with four strikeouts. He held a .300 hitting ECU team hitless in the final 4.0 crucial innings.
Falling down 1-0 in the third inning, Houston responded with two solid innings, plating four over the fifth and sixth frames to go up 4-1. Over the two frames, the Cougars used five hits and took advantage of one error to manufacture three of those runs.
Holding its first lead of the weekend, the Cougars gave up that lead in the seventh when ECU plated three to tie following three hits and two errors in the infield.
Houston tallied 13 hits in the 12 innings, led by junior Jacob Lueneburg (4x6, R, RBI) with a four-hit effort, a season-high. He was followed at the plate by senior John Cannon (3x4, R) with three base hits and junior Casey Grayson (2x3, 2B) with two hits.
The Cougars showed well all afternoon at the plate, striking out just twice during the contest, but again, managed to strand 12 runners.
With the tie, no pitchers were designated with a win or loss.
UP NEXT
Houston returns home to host Lamar on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Cougar Field in non-conference action. Following the midweek game, Houston will travel to Texas Tech for a three-game series in Lubbock, Texas next weekend.
