BIRMINGHAM, Ala.---Sophomore Jonathan Davis and junior Jacob Lueneburg were 6-for-7 at the plate with seven runs driven in to lead the Cougars, but the University of Houston baseball team saw its 8-3 lead after four innings disappear, falling 11-9 at UAB on Friday evening in C-USA action.
Houston dropped to 14-24-1 overall and 3-9-1 in conference play with the two-run loss, while UAB improved to 24-20 and 5-8 with the come-from-behind win.
The Cougars tallied 13 hits, matching UAB's 13 base knocks. Davis led Houston at the plate with a 4-for-5 with one run scored and four RBI. The four runs driven in by Davis were a career-high for the designated hitter. Lueneburg also was solid at the plate in a 2-for-2 effort with one run scored and three RBI and two walks and a hit-by-pitch. The lefty belted his first homerun of his Cougar career on a two-run shot in the fourth inning on a 2-0 count to right field.
Sophomore Landon Appling was 2-for-6 with one run scored for Houston's only other multi-hit outing. Senior John Cannon (1x3, 2 R, RBI) and freshman Michael Pyeatt (1x5, RBI) each had a hit and drove in a run.
Starter Austin Pruitt (6.0,7,4,4,4,2) pitched 6.0 innings, allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts. The junior left with an 8-4 Houston lead, but saw that lead disappear to receive the no decision.
Pitching out of the pen was sophomore Chase Wellbrock (0.2,4,5,2,1,1) and senior Mo Wiley (1.1,2,2,0,0,1). Several unlucky breaks occured while the two right-handers pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing seven runs, five which were unearned. Wiley suffered his first loss of 2012, falling to 2-1.
Houston grabbed the early lead with two runs in the first inning, but UAB tied it up in the latter half of the frame. A even game through two, the Cougars broke it open with six runs in the next two innings to go ahead 8-2 following a four-run fourth on four hits, including Lueneburg's two-run homerun. UAB began chipping away with a single run in the fourth and one in the sixth. Up 8-4, UAB racked up five hits and took advantage of one costly Houston error to plate five and go up 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh.
Davis came through once again in the eighth on an RBI-double to right center, tying the game at 9-9. Wiley worked a strong ninth inning, but with two outs and runners at second and third, the Blazers scored their final two runs on a missed-communicated infield popup down the third base line.
The UAB pitching staff fanned the Cougars 15 times. Reliever Ryan Nance (2.0,1,0,0,2,4) picked up the win for the Blazers.
