HOUSTON -University of Houston head women's tennis coach John Severance announced his resignation Wednesday afternoon following his eighth season at the helm. Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades will immediately conduct a national search for a replacement.
Severance spent three seasons as assistant coach at Houston before taking over the head coaching duties prior to the start of the 2004-05 season. The Cougars compiled a 125-63 record in eight winning seasons under Severance.
"I want to personally thank John for his years of service to the University of Houston and his dedication to our tennis student-athletes," Rhoades said. "John has been an important member of our athletics program for the past 11 seasons and we appreciate everything the tennis program accomplished during his eight years as head coach. We wish him all the best as he takes on a new endeavor."
Under Severance's tutelage, 11 student-athletes earned All-Conference USA honors, including 2002 C-USA Player of the Year and 2006 Wimbledon Second Rounder Sarah Borwell and 2007 C-USA Newcomer of the Year Leila Salek.
Current assistant coach Jo Keene will oversee the program until a replacement is found.
