Sophomore Curtis Reed led the Cougars and was tied for third with a first-round 69. It was the third time in his last three tournaments that the Castroville, Texas, native shot a season-low-tying 69.
Freshman Roman Robledo, making his first appearance at the C-USA Championships, was tied for fifth with two others after posting a first-round 70 on the 6,935-yard, par-72 course at Texarkana Country Club.
"Curtis and Roman both played very solid all day," third-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said." They played from good positions all day. They kept the ball in the proper relation to the hole, and they had two good putting rounds. When you put that together, you always have a chance to have a low score."
Reed was a steady performer throughout the round. Starting on hole No. 10, he birdied his second hole of the day and added another birdie on the par-4, 15th hole. After suffering his lone bogey of the day on No. 1 , he drained a birdie on the par-5, second hole and added another birdie on the par-5 seventh hole.
Robledo overcame three bogeys in his round to shoot his team-leading 14th sub-par round of the season. Posting a par on the 12th hole, the Harlingen, Texas, native alternated birdies and pars for the next six holes.
Robledo went on to post birdies on the second and seventh holes and finished the day with a team-leading five birdies.
As a team, the Cougars posted a team score of 292 and stood in a tie for fifth place with No. 34 UAB through the first 18 holes.
"We did a lot of things well," Dismuke said. "It's a three-day event. Our start didn't kill us, but we need to tighten up some things and improve in some areas."
No. 40 Memphis held the first-day lead with a 282, two strokes ahead of No. 42 SMU. Marshall fired a 286 to stand in third with No. 23 UCF coming in fourth at 290.
No. 33 East Carolina (295), Southern Miss (296), UTEP (297), No. 10 Tulsa (301) and Rice (309) rounded out the rest of the field.
Junior James Ross, making his C-USA Championships debut, was tied for 26th after shooting a 74. Sophomore Jesse Droemer was tied for 47th with a 79, while sophomore Bryn Flanagan stood in a tie for 52nd with an 82.
Memphis' Jack Belote and SMU's Max Buckley were tied for the first-day lead with 68s. Reed was tied with Memphis' Jonathan Fly for third, while Robledo was tied with UCF's Greg Eason and UAB's Thomas Sutton for fifth.
