HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team fell 3-2 to Tulsa in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Houston fell to 26-17 on the season and 11-5 during Conference USA games, and 1-1 in televised game as the action was televised on FOX Sports.
Starting pitcher Bailey Watts took the loss (10-7) for UH as she pitched all six innings allowing five hits and no earned runs.
The Cougars got the early lead and fell for the first time this season (10-1) when their leadoff batter scores in the opening frame.
Holly Anderson continued her hot streak as she led off the game with a single to extend her hitting streak to 11 games. Ashleigh Jones followed up Anderson's single with one of her own as she beat out an infield hit. Houston then executed a double steal to move both players into scoring position and the move paid off as Gregson delivered a single to centerfield to score Anderson.
Tulsa starting pitcher Lacey Middlebrooks took the win (14-4) and received some help from the outfield to keep the deficit at 1-0 in the inning as the speedy Jones was thrown out at home on Gregson's singl. Haley Outon also had a hit taken away from her as the Tulsa right fielder Jessica Stoelke laid out to cancel Outon's at bat.
Tulsa took the lead in the third inning as they scored three runs to make the game 3-1. A couple of great plays by the UH defense almost let Watts out of the jam but an error would prolong the inning leading to the score.
Ashleigh Jones fired a strike from center field to home to get the first out of the third before Anderson speared a hard line drive at third for the next out. With two outs, Tulsa was able to rally and take the 3-1 lead.
Haley Outon hit an 0-1 pitch deep over the left-field fence for her team-leading 13th home run of the year to cut the deficit to 3-2 but the Cougars would strand two runners in scoring position to end their scoring chances in the fourth inning.
Kendra Cullum and Anderson drew walks in the seventh inning as Melissa Gregson came up to the plate with runners on second and third. The senior would come up short as the Cougars fell to Tulsa 3-2.
