HOUSTON - Regarded as one of the top newcomers for his play this season, University of Houston junior James Ross was honored Friday for his off-the-course work when he was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team.
Ross, a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, was one of five members on the team. Now in his first season at Houston, he carries a 3.66 cumulative grade-point average in liberal studies with an emphasis in French, global business and economics.
He was joined on the team by Marshall's Bosten Miller, Memphis' Jack Belote, Tulsa's Chris Worell and UAB's Thomas Sutton.
Ross joined the Cougars in the summer after competing for his first two seasons at Michigan State. In 2011-12, Ross leads the team with a 72.87 scoring average and ranks second on the team with 12 rounds of par or better. He fired a second-round 64 at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Oct. 31, 2001, becoming only the fourth player in school history to post an 18-hole total that low.
He has posted a team-high four top-10 finishes this season, including a tie for second at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic on Sept 26-27 in the second fall tournament of the year.
