Houston, Texas -
University of Houston student-athletes are known for giving back to their alma mater and on Thursday former Cougar Football standout and current Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Stanford Routt made a significant donation to the UH Athletics Sports Medicine Staff in an effort to provide top-level care for UH student-athletes in all-sports.
A seven-year National Football League veteran, Routt spent his first seven seasons with the Oakland Raiders before signing a free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason. He broke up a career high 15 passes last season in Oakland and recorded a career high four interceptions.
"Stanford has always been so generous to us here at Houston and we are just so honored by his donation to our department," Head Athletics Trainer Michael O'Shea said. "We had a very generous gift from Donnie Avery (Indianapolis Colts) last year and to have Stanford reach out to provide us with the opportunity to upgrade our equipment and supplies impacts each of our student-athletes here at UH."
While at UH Routt, a second round NFL Draft pick in 2005, was a mainstay in the defensive backfield and finished his career with seven interceptions and 23 passes broken up. He was also a standout in track earning All-America honors in the 200 meters. He was later named the 2004 Conference USA Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.
Houston Football concludes its 2012 Spring Football schedule on Friday night with its annual Red & White Game. The game will be held at 7 p.m. at Robertson Stadium and admission is free to the public. Gates open at 6 p.m.
