HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team dropped a 3-2 game to the No. 11 Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana Wednesday night at Cougar Softball Stadium.
After an offensive show in the first game of the double header, Houston (10-11) struggled to get the bats going in the rebound game. Houston was outhit 12-3 in the finale but did turn a season high of three double plays to remain in the game.
"There are two things we feel we should be able to always do well - play defense and hit," said head coach Kyla Holas. "With two sophomores and freshmen, we knew pitching was going to take a bit to get going. But we didn't do enough to get the job done in the second game and we take pride in correcting our mistakes."
With the Cougars trailing 2-0, Holly Anderson put Houston on the board in the fifth inning with a solo home run to center field. It was the fifth home run of the year for Anderson, putting her in a tie with Haley Outon for the team lead.
Houston tied the game up later that inning as Sydney Gerbracht was thrown out trying to steal second but the throw attempt allowed senior Jennifer Klinkert to race home and slide underneath the tag to tie the game up at two a piece.
Louisiana answered with the go-ahead run in the sixth inning after Ashleigh Jones tried tracking down a ball in center and crashed into the fence. The double allowed Louisiana to take a 3-2 lead and that would be enough for the undefeated Cajuns (19-0) as they escaped Houston with two close wins.
Summer Groholski took her second loss of the day (3-4) as the freshman gave up only one run in 2.2 innings. Diedre Outon started the game but freshman Ty'ara Law came in relief after Outon allowed the bases loaded with no outs. Law was able to get out of the inning with one of Houston's three double plays.
