LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of Houston golf team returns to action this week when it competes at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament tees off at 8 a.m., Monday, with the first 36 holes. The final 18 holes begin at 8 a.m., Tuesday, on the 6,898-yard, par-72 course.
The Cougars are part of a 15-team field, which includes host Louisiana-Lafayette, Illinois, Kansas, Kent State, LSU, Memphis, NC State, SMU, South Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss, Texas State, Tulsa and UTSA.
Houston enters this week's tournament on the heels of a ninth-place finish at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif., on Feb. 25-26. It was the program's sixth straight top-10 team finish.
At that event, sophomores Curtis Reed and Jesse Droemer lowered their scores with each round to earn top-25 individual finishes. Reed tied for 13th at 2-under-par 214, while Droemer tied for 21st with a score of 216.
This season, freshman Roman Robledo leads the Cougars with a 72.86 scoring average and has posted eight rounds of par or better, including four rounds in the 60s. The Harlingen, Texas, native has led or tied for the team lead in four tournaments and joins with Reed as the only Cougars to play in every event this season.
Junior transfer James Ross stands third on the team with a 73.39 average and posted a season-best and career low 64 in the second round at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Oct. 31, 2011.
Freshman Kyle Pilgrim broke into the Cougar starting lineup early in the spring season and has played well during his first two collegiate outings. All five Cougars are expected to be in the lineup when the Louisiana Classics tees off Monday morning.
A year ago, the Cougars finished in a tie for 12th at this event with Droemer's 12th-place showing leading the team.
UP NEXT
Following the Louisiana Classic, the Cougars will play host to the Border Olympics on March 16-17 at Laredo Country in Laredo, Texas. It will be the second of three tournaments the Cougars play in the month of March.
