HOUSTON-The University of Houston baseball team spotted No. 17 UCF a six-run fifth inning that propelled the Knights to a 9-1 win over the Cougars on Saturday evening in C-USA action at Cougar Field.
Houston fell to 10-15 overall and 1-4 in conference play with the loss, while UCF improved to 21-6 and 4-1.
UCF pitching allowed 10 walks to the Houston hitters, a season-high, surpassing its previous high of eight coming vs. Delaware on Feb. 18. Houston went on to strand 15 base runners, a season-high.
The Cougars looked sharp in the first four frames as senior Jordan Lewis (4.1,3,4,4,2,4) was settled into a groove, fanning four Knights in 4.1 innings of work. However, a six-run fifth inning by UCF allowed them to take over Houston's lead, which sat at 1-0 prior to the inning. Lewis suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs on just three hits and two walks to fall to 3-4 on the season.
Houston took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as freshman Price Jacobs reached on a fielding error by the UCF shortstop. He was then moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by senior John Cannon and up to third on a single by freshman Cory Kay. Sophomore Landon Appling's fielder's choice then plated Jacobs for the early lead.
The Cougars were held to just five hits on the evening, led by junior Taylor White with a 2-for-3 effort with a walk. Sophomore Jonathan Davis (1x3), Cannon (1x1, BB, SAC), and Kay (1x3) each recorded a base hit.
Pitching in relief for Lewis was senior Mo Wiley (2.2,6,4,4,1,2), junior Ryan Bonnot (1.0,1,1,1,0,1) and freshman Chris Morales (1.0,0,0,0,0,0).
UCF starter Chris Matulis (6.0,4,1,0,6,3) earned the win after allowing one run on four hits and six walks with three strikeouts.
