AUGUSTA, Ga. - After a two-week break in its schedule, the University of Houston golf team returns to action this weekend when it competes at a pair of tournaments, beginning Saturday.
Playing as a team, the Cougars will take part at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational, beginning Saturday at Forest Hills Country Club. The two-day, 54-hole tournament - presented by Mercedes-Benz of Augusta, Spark Energy and 3M - tees off with 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 holes on Sunday. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com or by clicking here.
Senior Eric Adler and sophomore Bryn Flanagan also will compete as individuals this weekend at the Jim West Intercollegiate at Victoria Country Club in Victoria, Texas. That 54-hole, three-day tournament begins at 8 a.m., Sunday, with 18 holes each day and runs through Tuesday. Live scoring for the Jim West Intercollegiate will be available on GolfStat.com or by clicking here.
THE FIELDS
The Cougars will compete against one of the nation's top fields at the Insperity ASU Invitational on the 7,029-yard, par-72 course. Nine of the 16 teams in the field currently stand among the top 50 in GolfStat's latest national rankings. The tournament also boasts nine of the top 50 and 13 of the top 100 individual players.
The field features eight teams in the top 50, according to Golfstat's latest ratings: No. 13 Clemson, No. 22 Oklahoma State, No. 27 Baylor, No. 35 TCU, No. 38 Illinois, No. 40 SMU, No. 46 ASU and No. 50 Lamar. Nine of the top 50 and 13 of the top 100 individuals in the nation will also be in the field this weekend.
Houston joins No. 1 Texas, No. 13 Clemson, No. 22 Oklahoma State, No. 27 Baylor, No. 35 TCU, No. 38 Illinois, No. 40 SMU, No. 46, host and two-time defending national champion Augusta State, No. 50 Lamar, Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, South Carolina, Tennessee, TCU, USC Aiken and Virginia Tech.
"One of the main reasons we enjoy this event is the strength of the field. This is one of our strongest tournaments all season," said third-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke. "We have the chance to see and compete against a lot of great teams and a lot of great individuals."
Adler and Flanagan will square off against student-athletes from Cal State Fullerton, Houston Baptist, Houston-Victoria, Idaho, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Rice, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, UTEP, UTSA and host Texas State on the 6,870-yard, par-72 course at Victoria Country Club.
THE LINEUP
The Cougars will use the same team lineup for the fifth straight tournament at the Insperity ASU Invitational. Junior James Ross, sophomores Curtis Reed and Jesse Droemer and freshmen Roman Robledo and Kyle Pilgrim will lead the Cougars at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational.
"These five guys have done a nice job separating themselves in their tournament play and in qualifying rounds," Dismuke said.
Robledo leads the Cougars with a 73.07 scoring average and 10 rounds of par or better, including a team-high-tying four in the 60s.
Competing in his first season with the Cougars, Ross stands a close second on the team with a 73.17 average and is tied with Droemer and Reed for second with eight rounds of par or better. The Edinburgh, Scotland, native also put his name in the Cougars records book, firing a second-round 64 at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas on Oct. 31.
Ross became only the fourth player in Cougar history to enjoy a round that low. It tied as the third-lowest round in school history.
Pilgrim broke into the starting lineup a little more than a month ago and has made it difficult for Dismuke to remove him. The Colleyville, Texas, native enjoyed a career-best 29th-place finish at the Border Olympics on March 16-17 with an even-par 72 in the second round.
Jesse Droemer ranks third on the Cougars with a 73.54 average and tied for third at the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational on Oct. 24-25.
Reed was the Cougars' leading performer at the Border Olympics and joins with Robledo as the only Cougars to compete in every team-scoring tournament in 2011-12.
At the Jim West Intercollegiate, Adler will compete in his second event of the season after tying for 25th at the HBU Husky Invitational. Flanagan has appeared in five tournaments and tied for seventh at that event.
"Eric and Bryn won spots in qualifying to compete at the Jim West Intercollegiate. They haven't competed in a while so it was important for them to get some reps in and compete at a tournament," Dismuke said. "They are both talented players who have a chance to be in our lineup at the end of the season."
DOING IT ALL
In addition to their recent fine play on the course, five of the seven Cougars in action this weekend recently earned a place on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. Adler, Flanagan, Pilgrim, Reed and Ross collected the honor for posting a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
LAST TIME OUT
In their most recent action, the Cougars finished third at the Border Olympics on March 16-17 in Laredo, Texas. Houston stood in second place after the first 36 holes but struggled at times during the final round for its final finish.
Despite the tough ending, the Cougars posted their ninth straight top-10 team finish and enjoyed their third-best showing of the season. It trailed only the tie for 1st at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic on Sept. 26-27 and a second-place outing at the Rice Intercollegiate on Feb. 20-21.
Reed was a steady performer at the Border Olympics with even-par 72s in the first and final rounds. It was his best finish of the 2011-12 season.
UP NEXT
Following this weekend, the Cougars will play host to the return of The Woodlands All-American Intercollegiate on April 9-10 at The Woodlands Country Club.
This will be the first time since 2009 that Houston has hosted this event. The Woodlands All-American Intercollegiate was played all but one season from 1955 to 1997 and regularly hosted some of collegiate golf's premier teams and student-athletes.
