HOUSTON - Sophomore Diedre Outon threw her first career no hitter as the Houston offense provided eight runs to take the second game of Saturday's double header 8-0 over Memphis.
The Pflugerville, Texas native struck out six of the first nine batters en route to her fifth win of the year (5-3). Outon was masterful as she dealt 59 pitches and threw 41 of them across the plate for strikes and didn't allow any walks.
Only a single Memphis Tiger reached all game, off an error, and twin sister Haley Outon erased the runner as she tried stealing second base in the second inning. Diedre would retired the next 13 batters in succession as Houston improved to 17-13 overall and 6-2 in league play.
It was the second no hitter thrown by the Cougar pitching staff this year as Bailey Watts, the victor in game one, tossed a hitless game on Feb. 18 against Louisiana Monroe.
Ashleigh Jones led the game off by reaching second on a throwing error to first base and came around to score as Haley Outon and Jones pulled off a double steal. Houston improved to 6-0 on the year when their leadoff hitter Jones scores the first time at bat.
Houston got a big boost from Reina Gaber in the fourth inning as the junior connected on her first home run of the year for a three-run blast to make it 4-0. Diedre Outon followed Gaber and helped her own cause by producing her first double of the year. Outon would score as she and Anderson executed a double steal from first and third, and Anderson wound up on second after a throwing error allowed her to reach second base safely. Melissa Gregson capped off the big inning with an RBI single to score Anderson from second as Houston opened a 6-0 lead in the inning.
The Cougars tacked on a run in the firth and sixth inning for the run-rule decision. Haley Outon followed her sister with a double of her own and would score on Jennifer Klinkert's sacrifice fly to right in the fifth. Diedre scored the final run of the day to make it final in Houston's favor.
