NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Houston tennis team had its five-match win streak snapped as its rally fell just short in a 5-2 loss against Tulane on Saturday afternoon.
"We couldn't finish off points in doubles play but we were in four matches in singles against a team that's going to be nationally ranked," head coach John Severance said. "We'll work on our mistakes but we fought hard and played well as a team. We'll take the positives from this and try to build on them."
After the Cougars (5-3) fell in two of three doubles matches to drop the opening point, Tulane (9-1) held a 3-0 lead before the final four singles matches went into a third set.
Maja Kazimieruk forced a third set against Jenny Hois by winning the second frame, 6-2, but fell in the deciding set as the Green Wave clinched the match.
Bryony Hunter followed by claiming the final set over Caroline Thornton at the No. 2 position to put the Cougars on the board and Giorgia Pozzan rounded out the Houston scoring by winning the final two sets, 6-3, 6-2, over Mariam Kurdadze at the top spot to improve to 7-1 this spring.
The Cougars will look to get back to their winning ways against Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m., on March 7 at John E. Hoff Courts.
