HOUSTON - University of Houston sophomore Diedre Outon was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week following her dominant performances over the weekend as the No. 20 Cougars posted a 5-0 record to start the season.
Outon posted a 2-0 record with a save in four appearances in the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic hosted by the Cougars. With five games over three days, Outon was relied on to eat up innings and posted outstanding numbers.
"Diedre was huge for us this weekend," head coach Kyla Holas said. "We needed her to step up for us and she was able to eat up a lot of innings and come in clutch with her save on Sunday."
Outon posted a .164 batting average against over the four games she appeared in but was even more unhittable when the pressure rose as she held batters to a .111 average with runners on base.
Outon made her first appearance of the year against No. 11 Oklahoma State on Saturday and the sophomore hurler shutout the Cowgirls. Outon breezed through the first six innings allowing only a single and a walk. Outon allowed two hits in the seventh frame to open the inning but settled down and retired Oklahoma State to give the Cougars a 3-0 victory.
In her second start of the weekend, Outon allowed a leadoff double before clamping down against North Texas and keeping the Mean Green hitless until the sixth inning. Outon went the distance to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Outon also gave Houston 3.1 IP of relief and earned her first career save in Sunday's matchup against Sam Houston State.
This is the second time the Pflugerville, Texas, native has been named the C-USA Pitcher of the Week.
