HOUSTON - The No. 20 Houston Cougars started the season with a 10-0 victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi Friday night giving the team and head coach Kyla Holas win No. 400 in program history.
"It was pretty funny, the team was getting all excited for me getting number 400 but I told them `Hey, that's all you guys, I just stood here for it.' I'm glad they were excited and got to be a part of it."
The Cougars roared off to a 9-0 lead before making an out in the first inning and coasted to the five-inning victory. In the first, Houston reached base five different ways (walk, dropped third strike, hit by pitch, catcher's interference and a hit) as every batter scored a run in the opening frame.
Leadoff hitter Ashleigh Jones set the pace for Houston in the beginning as she drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Reina Gaber hustled out a throw to first on a dropped third strike and both players would score a run on a bases-loaded walk.
With a nine-run cushion and the pace of the game slowed, the game allowed Holas to get some subs in the game. Two of those reserves notched their first collegiate hits as redshirt freshman Sydney Gerbracht connected on a single in third inning to right and freshman Jennifer Hooker knocked a liner up the middle.
Starting pitcher Bailey Watts locked down the Islanders bats with her eight-strikeout performance over five innings. The sophomore took last year as a redshirt season and appeared for her first time on the mound since May 14, 2012.
"Getting Bailey off surgery and having her back out there was great. I'm so excited to see her back and she's brings such intensity and energy to our team when she's out there on the mound for us."
Houston added an insurance run in the fourth inning after Haley Outon drew a walk and advanced to third off Jennifer Klinkert's opposite-field double. Freshman Jaime Edwards laced a shot off the Islander's first baseman, who knocked it back to the second baseman and was able to get Edwards at first.
