HOUSTON - The University of Houston Football team dropped a 41-7 decision to Tulsa in Saturday's Homecoming contest at Robertson Stadium.
The Cougars fell to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in Conference USA play, while the Golden Hurricane improved to 8-2 on the season and remained unbeaten in league action with a 6-0 mark.
Sophomore quarterback David Piland was 15-of-32 for 148 yards with two interceptions,while sophomore running back Kenneth Farrow received the majority of the carries in Charles Sims' absence, rushing for 54 yards on 15 carries.
Eight different Houston receivers caught a pass on Saturday, led by freshman Deontay Greenberry's five receptions for 49 yards. Fellow freshman running back Ryan Jackson also hauled in two catches and his first receiving touchdown midway through the fourth quarter for the Cougars' lone points of the night.
Houston donned commemorative Homecoming uniforms that featured a No. 2 on the side of each helmet in honor of senior defensive back D.J. Hayden. The cornerback was seriously injured Tuesday following a collision with a teammate in practice and has been hospitalized since.
The Cougar defense came out inspired, stopping Tulsa on each of its first four possessions, including a Zach McMillian interception in Golden Hurricane territory.
Tulsa finally broke through on a 29-yard field goal late in the first quarter after taking over at Houston's 36-yard line following a punt out of the Cougars' own end zone.
The Golden Hurricane received preferable field position on its following possession as Houston's offense struggled to find a rhythm and marched 53 yards on seven plays to take a 10-0 lead with 9:17 remaining in the second quarter.
Tulsa added another touchdown with only 24 seconds remaining before the half to increase its lead to 17-0 on a drive that was aided by two pass interference calls on third downs.
The Cougars scored their lone touchdown with 7:08 left to play in the contest when senior quarterback Crawford Jones found Jackson for a 16-yard strike following a 17-yard connection to the freshman the previous play that converted a third and long.
Senior linebacker Everett Daniels led four Cougars with double-digit tackles with a career-high 18, including a sack. Phillip Steward (13), Trevon Stewart (.12) and Derrick Mathews (11) also racked up double-figure stops.
The Cougars return to action at 11 a.m. (CST), Saturday, at Marshall.
