HOUSTON - Charles Sims ran for a career-best 210 yards, and David Piland added 321 yards and two touchdowns through the air to lead the University of Houston Football team to a 44-21 rout of North Texas on Saturday evening at Robertson Stadium.
The Cougars claimed their second straight victory to improve to 2-3 overall this season, while North Texas dropped to 2-4 on the year. It was the Cougars' final non-conference contest of the regular season.
Sims surpassed the 200-yard barrier for the second time in his career on 20 carries (10.0 yards per rush) with a rushing and receiving touchdown. He became only the seventh player in school history with multiple 200-yard rushing games during his outstanding career.
Redshirt freshman Kenneth Farrow also notched a career best with 85 yards on only eight touches (10.6 yards per carry).
Houston took control of the game from the start, going 75 yards in just over one minute on its opening possession to take the early 7-0 lead on a 5-yard Sims scamper.
The Cougars struck again on the next possession, traveling 80 yards in under two minutes as Piland found Dewayne Peace for a 16-yard touchdown strike.
After the Houston defense forced a third consecutive North Texas punt, the Cougars marched 83 yards down the field and settled for a 21-yard Matt Hogan field goal to push the advantage to 17-0.
The Mean Green finally broke through on the scoreboard with 6:44 remaining in the first half to trim the deficit to 17-7, but Houston roared back as Farrow busted loose for a 48-yard touchdown run with 5:20 left to play.
North Texas quickly answered as Jeremy Brown matched Farrow with his own 48-yard touchdown scamper late in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 24-14.
Houston was able to counter again as Piland found Sims for a 27-yard touchdown reception with 1:21 remaining to cap a 75-yard yard drive to give the Cougars a comfortable 31-14 halftime advantage.
The Mean Green opened the scoring in the second half on a Derek Thompson 7-yard quarterback keeper to pull within 10 points, but North Texas wouldn't get any closer as the Cougars relied on two Hogan field goals, including a 50-yarder, and a Piland 8-yard keeper to close out the scoring.
As a team the Cougars rushed for 302 yards, marking the most since a 308-yard effort against UTEP on Sept. 10, 2010, while surpassing the 600-yard total offensemark (623) for the third time in the last four contests.
Piland won his second straight game when throwing for over 300 yards with 31 completions on 41 attempts without an interception en route to his first victory in Robertson Stadium.
Peace led the receivers with nine catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, while freshman Deontay Greenberry set career highs with six catches for 71 yards.
Sims added 51 yards on five receptions with a score and junior Shane Ros notched his first four career receptions for 61 yards.
Phillip Steward and Everett Daniels were among four Houston defenders with double-digit tackles with 12 stops apiece, while Kent Brooks and Chris Cermin grabbed interceptions.
The Cougars look to improve to 2-0 in Conference USA play against UAB at 11 a.m., Saturday at Robertson Stadium.
