Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Houston volleyball team lost its first match in Conference USA play with a 3-0 (20-25, 14-25, 23-25) setback against Tulsa Friday night at the Reynolds Center.
The loss snaps a five-match win streak for the Cougars and drops Houston to 10-4 on the season and 3-1 in league action.
Senior Lucy Charuk finished the contest with 10 kills on 20 attempts with a .400 hitting percentage and eight blocks. Junior Stephanie Nwachukwu added seven kills and four blocks. Freshman Caitlin Ogletree had 28 assists and freshman Natalie Keck had a game-high 21 digs.
"Lucy did a great job tonight," head coach Molly Alvey said. "She came out ready to play, had some huge blocks and was swinging to kill. Even though Stephanie didn't hit her normal numbers tonight, she was also a key player for us. She held Tyler Henderson to below average numbers, was a great blocker and added energy to the match."
"Defensively, Natalie was phenomenal. She had 21 digs and two assists and played a pretty exceptional match. We had some strong individual performances, but otherwise we didn't compete well tonight."
Houston and Tulsa battled it out to start the match, trading points to a 16-16 tie. The Golden Hurricane broke the tie with a 4-0 run to lead 20-16. The Cougars battled back to within three, 23-20, but Tulsa would take the next two points to win the set, 25-20.
Tulsa jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the second set before going on to win 25-14.
After scoring the first three points, Tulsa took an 8-4 lead to open the third set. The Cougars would slowly chip away at the deficit before taking a 12-11 lead. The Golden Hurricane would call a timeout after giving up its lead and out of the break the two teams would trade points before Tulsa was able to build a 20-17 cushion. The Cougars would pull within one, 24-23, late in the set, but a kill by Henderson would secure the 25-23 Tulsa win.
