HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2011 season, falling 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 22-25) to No. 21 Dayton Friday evening at the State Farm Classic in Champaign, Ill.
Senior Lucy Charuk led Houston (3-1) with 10 kills and three blocks. Freshman Caitlin Ogletree tallied 27 assists, while freshman Esther Longoria finished with a team-high 10 digs.
"The reason this weekend is key for us is because if we want to be a top 25 program, we have to see and play top 25 teams," head coach Molly Alvey said. "This is a great experience for us and the team needs to learn that it is extremely hard work to be a top 25 team."
"At times we played pretty good, but we are not mentally prepared to play and compete for an entire match. Lucy (Charuk) and Chandace (Tryon) were good momentum changers but two people will never win a match. We need to learn from this experience and understand that to be a winner it takes extremely hard work everyday."
After falling behind 11-4 in the first set, Houston was forced to call its first timeout. The Cougars continued to struggle out of the break but were able to cut the deficit to 16-10 before the Flyers went on a 5-2 run. UH trailed 21-12 after the run and were never able to recover, falling 25-19 in the first set.
After dropping the first two points of the second set, UH took a short-lived 4-2 lead. Dayton regained a 5-4 advantage but Houston battled to tie the score 9-9. They would trade points until an attack error by junior Stephanie Nwachukwu gave Dayton a 14-13 lead. Dayton never relinquished its lead following the error and went into the break leading 2-0.
Houston dug itself a 6-1 hole to start the third set and it looked as though Dayton would easily earn the win. The Cougars, however, had another idea. Despite playing from behind for most of the set, Houston put together an 8-3 run midway through and pulled within three, 22-19. They traded kills with the Flyers to trail 24-22 but a kill by Rachel Krabacher ended the Cougar comeback.
