HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team started fall practice Wednesday afternoon and ten letterwinners return from last year's Conference USA championship squad. Joining the veterans on the team are eight newcomers.
The Cougars started the afternoon with a light load of weight training and conditioning under the instruction of assistant director for sports performance Dale Jones before heading over to Cougar Softball Field.
It was then time for head coach Kyla Holas and the rest of the softball coaching staff to put the team through the practice and drills. After such a long time off from the field in organized team practices, the fundamentals were a focus for the Cougars.
The practice began with some base running drills before the players separated into their position groups of infielders, outfielders and pitchers and catchers. Batting practice followed after the individual groups worked on their hitting and fielding drills.
"We have a long way to go before the spring season starts but we have some fall games coming up soon that we need to take care of first," said Holas. "It's important to lay the foundation for a successful season at the first practice and have everyone buy into our philosophy from the beginning."
