Houston - Junior Stephanie Nwachukwu tied a career-high, tallying 15 kills in a 3-0 sweep of the Xavier Musketeers on Saturday afternoon during the University of Houston volleyball team's second match of the Flo Hyman Collegiate Classic at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Nwachukwu has posted double-digit kills in each of the Cougars' wins in the season-opening tournament and is hitting .388. Freshman Caitlin Ogletree posted a game-high 33 assists and 10 digs for her first career double-double, while senior Ingrida Zauere tallied 10 kills against the Musketeers.
The Cougars stormed out to a 4-1 lead to open the match, forcing Xavier to call a quick timeout in an attempt to regroup. Houston scored the first two points off the bench, but the Musketeers came back to tie the set, 8-8, before committing two errors to put UH back on top, 10-8. The two teams battled back and forth before the Cougars broke a 20-20 tie and took control. Senior Ingrida Zauere connected on a kill to close out the set, 25-23.
Nwachukwu paced the Cougars in the opening set, connecting on six kills.
Houston carried the momentum from the first set to the second, jumping out to a 10-4 early lead. The momentum would be slowed, however, as the Musketeers chipped away at the Cougars' lead to tie the set, 12-12. UH scored the next three points and regained the lead for good. Xavier pulled within one, 21-20 but the Cougars scored four of the next five points to win the set, 25-21.
The Cougars recorded 17 kills in the second set with six coming from Zauere. Through the first two sets, Houston held a 28-26 kill advantage and recorded six blocks.
Just as they had in the second set, Houston jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set, quickly prompting a timeout from the Xavier bench. UH continued to extend its lead out of the break, 19-10, and cruised to a 25-16 win.
Houston earned the win by combining for a .394 hitting percentage on 16 kills in the third set.
The Cougars close out tournament play at 7 p.m. against Central Arkansas.
