The Cougars got off to a slow start only taking three shots in the first half as Duke hauled of 11. Duke capitalized in the eighth minute when Kelly Cobb connected on the first goal, assisted by Mollie Pathman.
Houston became more aggressive in the second half, doubling its shot output, but could not come away with a goal. Mollie Pathman added another goal for Duke in the 49th minute connecting off a Laura Weinberg cross from inside the box, putting the Blue Devils up 2-0.
The Cougars were able to hold the Blue Devils the final 41 minutes of the game. But Houston was unable to connect on a goal. The game ended with a final score of 2-0 in favor of Duke.
Koski, making her first start of the season, received the loss, although she had a solid performance. Koski faced 19 shots, making five saves.
Freshman Kelsey Zamora recorded three shots, all of which were on goal, putting pressure on the Duke goalkeeper.
The Cougars will have to learn from their mistakes and rebound quickly as they are slated to face No. 3 North Carolina at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.
