HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team will play five tournaments in the fall season and 20 matches in the spring, highlighted by contests against six teams from major conferences, head coach John Severance announced Wednesday.
"We're excited about an action-packed fall season, and the dual match schedule in the spring is one of the toughest I've had," said Severance. "This season will be full of opportunities. We play four Big 12 teams, including Baylor, who advanced to the National Semifinals last season. We play teams from out of our region and two Conference USA schools, including Tulsa at home, who is the back-to-back league champion."
For the second-straight year, the Cougars kick off the fall slate in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the Islander Invitational, where the squad saw great success in 2010. The Cougars then move west to take part in the San Diego State Invitational and follow that up with a trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Roberta Allison Classic.
The Cougars return to the state of Texas for the ITA Regional event in Fort Worth before playing host at the annual Cougar Fall Draw on Nov. 4-6 to close out the fall season.
The spring slate consists of 20 matches, with 10 being played at John E. Hoff Courts on campus. The dual match schedule is highlighted by four contests against Big 12 schools as well as matches against Pac-12 and Big East members.
SPRING SCHEDULE
The Cougars will again kick off the season against perennial power Baylor in Waco, and open the 2012 home season against new Pac-12 member Colorado on Jan. 29.
After a home meeting with McNeese State on Feb. 3, the Cougars take to the road the following day for a matchup with Texas Tech, who finished last season ranked in the top 50. After tangling with the Red Raiders, the Cougars host a three-match homestand against Northwestern State, UTSA and Sam Houston State.
Houston travels to Hammond, La., to meet Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 24 and breaks into C-USA play the following day against Tulane.
The Cougars then return home for exciting matchups with Iowa State and Marquette on March 12 and March 14, respectively, before jetting out to Las Vegas, for spring-break contests against Idaho, Kansas and Bowling Green.
Houston plays host to back-to-back league champion Tulsa on March 31 and wraps up the home slate the following weekend with matches against Tarleton State and UTPA.
The Cougars close out the regular season on the road with three matches in four days against Prairie View A&M, St. Edwards and Texas State.
The 2012 C-USA Championship will be held April 19-22 at the Racquet Club in Memphis, Tenn.
