HOUSTON - After completing her senior season with a successful NCAA Super Regional run, Katy Beth Sherman will enter her second year of graduate school as the University of Houston's Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship award winner.
Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky named the 12 recipients of the third annual award on Monday afternoon. The award's namesake, Dr. Castañeda, served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008.
The conference annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
Sherman, the Cougars' starting right fielder and senior team captain, was the selected award recipient for the University of Houston. A four-year letterwinner for the Cougars, Sherman served as the leadoff hitter that guided Houston to the 2011 C-USA regular season title.
Additionally, she led the Cougars to the NCAA Super Regionals as a catalyst for Houston's powerful offense. She was the winning run in the Cougars' victory against the NCAA Tournament's overall-No. 3 seed Texas en route to becoming the NCAA Austin Regional Champions. Playing on a mission, the senior led the team with a .381 average in the NCAA Tournament that included eight base hits, a double and a triple.
Sherman, who hails from nearby Waller, Texas, graduated summa cum laude in less than four years with a degree in corporate communication and is currently pursuing a master's degree in UH's human resource development program.
