PEARL, Miss. - The University of Houston baseball team battled the Rice Owls for 10 innings but in the end they would fall one run short, 4-3, of taking home the 2011 Conference USA Championship title Saturday night at Trustmark Park.
The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings but the Owls would battle back and tie the score in the sixth inning before scoring the winning run in the 10th inning.
Senior Ryan Still led off the game for the Cougars with a single to left field and advanced to second when the left fielder misplayed the ball. Freshman Landon Appling put him at third on a sacrifice bunt and then a wild pitch by Matthew Reckling put the Cougars up 1-0.
Junior Codey Morehouse connected on an RBI triple to center field and then put the Cougars up 3-0 on a throwing error by second baseman Michael Ratterree.
The Owls would pull within one of the UH lead, 3-2, in the fifth inning. They capitalized on two Cougar fielding errors to send two runs home. An RBI single by Derek Hamilton in the sixth inning would tie the score 3-3.
The score would remain tied until the bottom of the 10th inning. With runners on first and second base, Craig Manuel singled through the right side, scoring Anthony Rendon to end the game.
Junior Jared Ray turned in an All-Tournament team performance, going eight innings. He allowed one earned run on eight hits with four strikeouts. Junior Jordan Mannisto dropped to 4-4 after giving up one run on two hits.
Juniors John Cannon and Matt Creel recorded two hits, while Morehouse scored a run and had an RBI.
In addition to Ray being named to the All-Tournament Team, senior Ryan Still, freshman Landon Appling and senior Caleb Ramsey all earned selections to the team.
