University of Houston's commitment Mark'Quis Frazier won the National Junior College Championship in the 200m dash this weekend at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson, Kan.
The Barton County Community College student-athlete lowered his time in the 200m during the prelims to 21.00 to be seeded fourth. In the finals, Frazier bested his competition as he took first place at 20.38.
"It feels great to win a national championship," said Frazier. "This is something I've always wanted and worked hard at to accomplish. I was able to persevere through the injuries and just keep working hard and it's a great accomplishment."
Due to an injury, Frazier only competed in two 200m races this season - the regionals and national championship meets. The Lancaster, Texas native apparently didn't need many races this year to hone his skill as he was able to turn in a mark that would rank third-fastest in the entire NCAA this year.
Frazier also finished third in the 100m (10.28).
"I'm ready to get started training with the (Cougars). I grew up with Kelvin Furlough and when I went on a visit, the whole team made me feel like it was home. It's the perfect fit. Having Coach Burrell there to coach me is great too. He's already been to the places I'm trying to go."
The Barton County College 4x100m team, which had Frazier running the second leg, entered Sunday's finals as the No. 1 seed but a false start prevented them from retaining their top spot.
Barton finished in third place overall with 69 points. They won the NJCAA Indoor National Title earlier this year.
As a senior in high school, Frazier helped his Lancaster High School claim the Texas 4A state title.
