HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team will match up against No. 6/9 Texas for the second time this season on day two of the NCAA Austin Regional.
Houston (41-16) defeated No. 24/25 Louisiana-Lafayette (49-10) to advance to the winner's bracket. After regional host and overall-No. 3 seed Texas (45-9) defeated Texas State (33-24) on Friday night, the Longhorns became the Cougars' next opponent.
Saturday's meeting will mark the second between Houston and Texas this season and the pair's 19th meeting overall. The Cougars' previous meeting resulted in then-No. 25 Houston falling to then-No. 13 Longhorns on March 10, 4-1.
After taking down ULL for the first time since the 2008 season, Houston will look to break another long streak on Friday as the Cougars set out for their first win against the Longhorns since March 18, 2009.
Sophomore Holly Anderson drilled an opposite field homerun in the first at bat of the game the last time the two teams met. The long ball was the first time All-American pitcher Blaire Luna surrendered a homer to the game's leadoff batter. Luna threw a one-hit shut out against Texas State in Friday night's win.
Senior Amanda Crabtree (19-8) took the loss against the Longhorns earlier this season, despite allowing just three hits and two earned runs. Like Luna, Crabtree also allowed just one hit in her start on opening day of the Austin Regional.
Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The winner moves on to play on Sunday at 1 p.m., while the loser will stay at McCombs Field for a 6 p.m. matchup on Saturday.
