HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team gave up four runs to the Memphis Tigers in the first inning and were never able to recover, falling 4-0 in game two of their final series of the regular season Friday night at FedEx Park.
Senior Ryan Still and sophomore Chase Jensen were the only Cougars to record a hit as Houston was two-hit for the first time since March 29.
Junior Matt Creel went five innings in his fourth start. He allowed four runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts. Senior Chase Jensen closed out the final three innings, giving up just one hit while holding the Tigers scoreless.
Memphis struck in the first inning, loading the bases on three straight singles before taking a 1-0 lead on T.J. Rich's ground out to first base. Creel struck out the next batter to put two outs on the board but a ball misplayed by Still at second base allowed two runs to score. Memphis then took a 4-0 lead on Ethan Gross' single to right field.
With the loss, Houston falls to 24-30 on the season and 11-12 in Conference USA play.
