Klinkert, Sherman Named to Conference USA All-Academic Team

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team landed two Cougars on the 2011 Conference USA All-Academic team when the league office announced that redshirt junior Jennifer Klinkert and senior Katy Beth Sherman were selected on Tuesday.
Repeating as C-USA All-Academic honorees, Klinkert and Sherman each played vital roles in helping the Cougars claim their third C-USA regular-season title in program history.
Klinkert owns a 3.83 GPA as a nutrition major and has earned the distinguished C-USA Academic Medal four times during her career. Backing brains with talent, the redshirt junior second baseman ranks within the league's top-10 in six different categories: slugging percentage (.523/9th), runs scored (32/7th), home runs (9/8th), walks (23/6th), sacrifice flies (3/4th) and fielding double plays (7/7th).
After obtaining her undergraduate degree in Corporate Communications last May, Sherman earns her spot with a 3.66 mark as a graduate student working toward a Master's degree in human resource development.
The only grad student on the All-Academic list, Sherman has scored 21 runs in C-USA games, a count that ranks second in the league. A starter in the outfield, Sherman also ranks second on the team in batting average (.333) and her 50 hits and 33 runs scored on the season puts her in the top-10 amongst all C-USA's hitters.

Klinkert, Sherman and the top-seeded Houston Cougars will take on the No. 8 Southern Miss Golden Eagles in the first round of the 2011 Conference USA Softball Championship. Hosted by East Carolina, the game is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.
