HOUSTON - After a 3-0 sweep of Tulane over the weekend to start Conference USA play, the University of Houston baseball team was named the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Central Region Team of the Week.
The Cougars (15-14, 3-0 C-USA) opened the series with a 2-0 shutout of the Green Wave behind a career-long outing from junior Matt Creel. The Greenwell Springs, La., native pitched seven scoreless innings in the league opener, allowing just three hits with a career-high six strikeouts. Junior Jordan Mannisto closed out the final two innings for his second save of the year.
Three Cougars recorded two hits at the plate, including two doubles from junior Jake Runte.
Houston came back out on Saturday to earn a 5-2 win in game two of the series. Junior Jordan Lewis improved to 3-0 on the mound, allowing two runs in 7.1 innings. Sophomore Dakota Dill earned his fourth save of the year, pitching the final 1.2 innings of the game.
Freshman Landon Appling turned in a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, scoring two runs.
In the series finale, Mo Wiley came in to pitch the second shutout of the series. He went eight scoreless innings, with senior Taylor Hammack coming in to close out the last inning. Senior Caleb Ramsey recorded four RBIs in the win, while sophomore Chase Jensen had two.
During the series with the Green Wave, the Cougars allowed only eight Tulane batters to advance to third base and they gave up just two runs in 27 innings.
With the three wins, Houston is the only undefeated team in Conference USA and has swept a league opponent on the road for the first time since a trip to Marshall on April 24-26, 2009.
