PHILADELPHIA - The University of Houston track and field program concluded the 117th edition of the Penn Relays Saturday night. Relays are the focal point of the carnival and the Cougars competed well across the board in front of the 48,531 spectators.
"Being successful here is a process," said head coach Leroy Burrell. "You come one year and you make the finals, then you come another year and your threaten to win and I think that's where we are at right now. Next year we'll go for the wins. It's such big meet and unlike any other, it's something you have to adjust to."
The men's 4x400m relay team took fourth place (3:08.37) in the last event of the meet for the Cougars. Errol Nolan ran the lead anchor and had the team in fourth place at the handoff. Garrett Hughey and Tyron Carrier kept the Cougars close before handing the baton over to Kelvin Furlough who turned in a 46.25 anchor leg.
"I'm really happy with the men's relay team. We have some depth on the men's side so we were able to go really strong in the final relay of the meet (4x400m) and if we didn't have a couple of tactical errors in the race, we could've ran a season best in that race."
The men's season best mark in the event is 3:08.09, set at the Mt. Sac Relays April 15.
Alex Bentley took third place in the pole vault, clearing the 5.05m/16-6.75 height.
Chris Carter finished fourth in the triple jump with his 15.79m/51-9.75 leap.
Grecia Bolton entered the 100m finals as the ninth seed but was able to improve upon her qualifying time and overtake other competitors as she took fifth place at 11.52.
The women's 4x400m relay team was unable to match the season best but placed eighth in the finals with their 3:42.87 time.
"We have a little more work to do and hopefully we address those issues at the Conference USA Championships, and then the NCAA Regionals and Championships are up next. "
