Philadelphia - The Cougars track and field finished day two of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia battling more weather elements and some of the world's best athletes at historic Franklin Field in front of 38,806 spectators.
"This is the most student-athletes we've had competing in the championships on Saturday at this meet. It shows we're building and getting stronger and that's something I'm proud to be a part of. Relays are the main focus of this meet and we have several in the Championships of America and College finals."
The women's 4x100m took fifth place in the finals by taking off 0.3 seconds off their time to clock in at 44.11. Tai'shea Reese, Whitney Harris, Kalyn Floyd and Grecia Bolton turned in the fourth fastest relay time of the year for the Cougars.
"We showed why we're one of the elite teams in the country," said coach Burrell. "It was a solid effort, it wasn't our best, and we finished fifth against the same teams we hope to see at the NCAA Championships in a few weeks."
The same quartet, but with Floyd as the lead leg and Reese as the final curve runner, also took fifth in the preliminaries of the 4x200m (1:33.98). They race tomorrow in the finals at 1:45.
The men's 4x400m relay team qualified for the college finals on Saturday at 5:35 finishing in 3:12.84.
"It wasn't our best effort in the race but it was quality showing. We hope to get some better running conditions tomorrow and keep improving our marks."
The usually stellar Houston long jumpers battled under tough conditions as a large field split the event into two flights and the Cougars had to compete in the latter. A bright sunshine was replaced suddenly with cold winds and rain and no Cougar bettered their marks in the contest. Jonathan Williams came closest with his 7.35m/24-1.5 leap.
"Chris and Lamar had a rough day with the wind and weather but Jonathan handled it well. Hopefully Chris and Lamar bounce back tomorrow in the triple jump."
Seth Arnold took fourth place in the pole vault competition, clearing 4.80m/15-9 on his second attempt.
Grecia Bolton finished in 9th place in the 100m. The junior from Katy, Texas will race at 3:45 p.m.
