Houston Tennis Set to Begin Play at C-USA Championship

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team will kick off the 2011 Conference USA Tennis Championship against No. 8 seed Tulane at 1:00 p.m. CT Thursday afternoon at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla.
The ninth-seeded Cougars won nine of their final 10 matches of the regular season to enter the league tournament with a 16-7 overall record. The 16 victories currently rank as the 10th-most wins in a single season in program history.
The Cougars have been stellar in singles play this season, winning 70 percent of their matches with a combined record of 91-39. The singles lineup of Celia Fraser (10-6), Bryony Hunter (11-5), Giorgia Pozzan (16-6), Joanna Kacprzyk (16-5), Maja Kazimieruk (16-5) and Dionne Sanders (13-6) have all captured at least 10 wins this spring.
Sanders, a freshman from Stourbridge, U.K., has reeled off 11-consecutive victories and is 11-1 at the bottom three singles positions, while Hunter has notched seven-straight wins since returning from injury.
The winner of Thursday's contest will face top-seeded Tulsa at 1:00 p.m. CT on Friday. The Cougars are 21-17 overall in C-USA Tournament play since 1997.
