HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team scored six runs in the seventh inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit and go on to defeat the Kentucky Wildcats 8-5 on Saturday afternoon at the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
With the Cougars trailing 2-1 in the seventh, sophomore M.P. Cokinos singled through the middle to plate junior Jake Runte before scoring the go ahead run on junior John Cannon's triple. After a fielder's choice to throw Cannon out at home, senior Ryan Still started a UH four-run rally with two outs by reaching base on a walk.
Senior Caleb Ramsey would come to the plate with runners on second and third and hit a single through the right side to send home the base runners. He would go on to score on junior Matt Creel's single to third base, while sophomore Chase Jensen would cap the inning with a single to send Creel home.
The Wildcats would add a run in the seventh and eight innings but it wouldn't be enough as the Cougars scored a run to seal the game in the ninth inning. Ramsey led off the ninth with a triple to right center and scored on Creel's single through the left side.
Creel improved to 3-0 on mound after he came in to pitch two innings of relief, allowing three runs on four hits. Sophomore Dakota Dill closed out the contest to earn his first career save, pitching two scoreless innings.
Junior Jordan Lewis made the start, tossing five innings while allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
The Cougars wasted little time getting on the board against the Wildcats. Freshman Landon Appling led off the game with a walk and scored on Ramsey's single up the middle.
Houston held UK scoreless through the first three innings, but they took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning off Luke Maile's two run home run to left field.
UP NEXT
Houston will close out tournament play against Texas A&M at 6 p.m. Sunday. Following the tournament, the Cougars will return home for two midweek games against McNeese State and Texas Southern on March 8-9.
